In January 1861, Sara Lucy Bagby was arrested for escaping Wheeling, Virginia and her trial was in Cleveland, Ohio. Striking national headlines, she was returned to her slave master William Goshorn, based on the 1950 Fugititve Slave Law, once he provided proof that he legally owned her.
